Imagine a thought experiment in which you are standing in front of a large box. The box has an opening in which you can insert your hand. The box could have Japanese superstar Ado inside or perhaps not. While you haven’t tested your hypothesis, the Ado inside the box is in a state of superposition, existing and not existing at the same time. The only way to break the superposition is to insert your hand and hope for a handshake. If the Ado inside the box exists, she will shake your hand.
This experiment, known as Schrodinger’s Ado, will be carried out on a large scale in celebration of the release of Ado’s second album, Zanmu, which will be released on the 10th of July. Serial numbers will be included in the album which can be used as lottery tickets to apply for the event. 1000 lucky participants will be drawn, and they will be able to shake hands with their idol inside the box over 2 days, with 500 per day. The handshake event will take place in October 2024 in Tokyo, with the date and time to be announced later and venue details to be communicated only to winners.
The handshake event is only one of 3 prizes you can aspire to with your Zanmu serial code, denoted as the A-Course. You can also apply to the B-Course, which will allow 71 winners to receive an autographed poster with their names on it, as well as the C-Course, which will allow 1800 winners to buy pre-sale tickets to the JAPAN TOUR 2024 “Profile of Mona Lisa” concerts, specifically for the October 12 and 13 dates in K Arena Yokohama, Kanagawa.
Ado is a Japanese singer who made her debut in 2020, at the age of 17. Her debut single “Ussewa” peaked at number 1 on Billboard Japan Hot 100, Oricon Digital Singles Chart, and the Oricon Streaming Chart. The music video for “Ussewa” went viral and at the time of writing, it has accumulated over 333 million views. Since then, Ado released her first album Kyougen in January 2022 and performed as Uta in the One Piece Film Red and Soundtrack. Ado’s “New Genesis,” which was used as the theme song for the anime film One Piece Film: Red, topped Apple Music’s Global Top 100 charts. She also released a Utattemita cover album on December 13th, 2023. It included some classics such as Tokyo Ghoul‘s opening “Unravel” (originally sung by TK from ling tosite sigure).
She recently completed her first world tour “Wish” which lasted from February 4th, 2024, to April 1st, 2024, during which she performed 14 concerts in various locations in South and East Asia, Europe, and North America. As Ado chooses to remain anonymous, she used a variety of measures to protect her identity, such as banning usage of phones and cameras during the concert, heavy use of backlights to obscure her face and only show her silhouette, as well as what is commonly known as the “Ado Box” inside of which she performs. The Ado Box can be made opaque on demand in case there is an incident compromising her anonymity during the show, but is transparent most of the time and contributes to the unique feel of her concerts. You can see it in action in this video of her live performance of Aishite Aishite Aishite during the Wish world tour in Los Angeles:
